I enjoyed "Restless" by William Boyd; "Light on Snow" by Anita Shreve; "Keeping the World Away" by Margaret Forster; "Purple Hibiscus" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie; and "Half of a Yellow Sun" by the same author; "The Mysteries of Glass" by Sue Gee; "Miss Garnet's Angel" by Salley Vickers

"Wild Thyme in Ibiza" by Stewart Andersen is a good fun read about his life on the island when he was a young man and Ibiza was unspoilt by tourism; Patricia Cornwell crime novels are some of the best of the genre; "Labyrinth" by Kate Mosse is a good holiday read; "Is It Me, Or Is It Hot In Here?" is what I keep asking myself at my time of life - a self help manual; "A Tale Etched In Blolod And Hard Black Pencil" by Christopher Brookmyre if you like crime and satire combined.... I could go on.

If you're interested in Women's history then 'Snow Flower and the Secret Fan' by Lisa See is a great read.  It tells the story of Lily who, living in 19th century China, has to undergo foot binding, as women's position in society was determined by how small their feet were. It also tells how, in  such a patriarchal culture, women learned their own secret writing (nu shu) and developed special friendships that last a life time.  I would say this is one of the best reads I've had in ages.

Thanks Jax, I'll look to buy this one, I love anything to do with Chinese culture and history (Im half chinese).  Re-reading Wild Swan at the moment by Jung Chang (I think).  It was by best all ever book the first time I read it, but not as drawn to it second time around.  A better one, The Russian Concubine, by Im afraid I don't know as I borrowed it from an American colleague... fiction but definitely worth a read.

Thanx Bev, I love any  fiction  about women's history  which is well researched, informative and illuminating. I just looked up The Russian Concubine by Kate Furnivall, and I will definately be trying to get hold of a copy soon.

Hi Jane, I had been recommended to read the Kite Runner, by a couple of friends and hadn't done, but I  then I saw the DVD and watched it and was really impressed. I wish I had read it. So much to do and not enough time.

I love autobiographys - I have to admit to having just finshed Keeping it real - Jodie Marsh. If you want to look into the life of a real Essex girl it's a must. You have to give everyone a chance.

Hi Everyone, I read a great book recently called 'The Art of Racing In The Rain' - it's a story of bravery and loss told through the eyes of the family dog. Utterly heartwarming. I very much recommend it.

    Laura :)

After deciding I was going to try and get a copy of The Russian Concubine, last week I  walked into a charity shop  and found a nearly new edition fo £2.00.  I now have a holiday read too.  Charity shops are great for books.

Always dangerous to let me into threads like this as I'm a writer. ;)

Just been reading A Flame in Hali, latest Darkover book from Marion Zimmer Bradley. Any other fantasy fans around?

Okay. For those of you who like me LOVE LOVE LOVE well researched historical fiction then I offer up CJ Sanson. He has done a trilogy of books set in the Tudor period. They are in effect crime novels, and my God does the guy know his Tudor period. If you really want to feel that you are slap bang in the middle of the sights and smells of a sixteenth century town then I highly recommend this author. The first of the trilogy is "Dissolution" which is great but I tell you, they get even better after that!!!
